The Challenge: Inspiring the Board to Complete a Half-billion Dollar Capital Campaign

University of Nevada Las Vegas In 2007, the UNLV Foundation was facing multiple challenges: to complete a half billion dollar capital campaign in the worst economic downturn in Las Vegas history and to develop a trusting and robust relationship between a new President and the University’s key volunteers.  The officers of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees recognized the need to re-engage and energize the Board during this time of challenge.

Gonser Gerber, with their 60 years of experience in advancement provided the valuable expertise to lead the Board, University senior administration, and senior Foundation staff through our first ever Board Retreat.  Working together we were able to reaffirm our mission and affirm support for the President’s vision for the University. Momentum from the retreat was directly responsible in the successful conclusion of the campaign.

“The expertise Gonser Gerber brought to the process of preparing for and facilitating our retreat was invaluable.  Their ability to work collaboratively with staff to prepare, survey, and interview Board members to address their needs and concerns, and lead lively and engaging conversations produced an outcome of a reinvigorated Board focused on success.”

William Jewell College Launches Aggressive Campaign

The Challenge: An Aggressive Campaign in Tough Economic Times

William Jewell CollegeWilliam Jewell College is a national liberal arts college in the Kansas City area. Jewell hired Gonser Gerber as Advancement Counsel, but used their consultant in a much broader capacity.

President David Sallee writes, “Gonser Gerber was a terrific partner in helping William Jewell College take on the largest fundraising initiative in its 163 year history. They were so critical in making sure we did not misstep in the early planning phases of the campaign. Our consultant helped our Board understand their role in shaping, approving, and funding a major philanthropic effort.”

As Advancement Counsel, Gonser Gerber recommended material changes to the staff structure, program budgets, and systems that would support the Advancement program. The campaign was launched in late 2007 and, as is the case with so many institutions, it was materially impacted by the economic downturn. Nevertheless, the campaign celebrated a successful completion of its first phase with over $57 million raised.

“The fact that Gonser Gerber hires consultants who themselves have been leaders and successful practitioners provides great value. Our consultant was more than Campaign Counsel; he was institutional counsel and his wisdom benefited more than our Advancement team. Our challenging campaign is a success and the systems supporting our development efforts have been strengthened. I believe Gonser Gerber’s good work will serve the College for many campaigns to come.”
